  15.           INTRODUCTION
  16.  
  17.           This document contains tips about  installing and using the  high
  18.           resolution Windows  3.0 drivers for the VGAWONDER.  It covers the
  19.           most  commonly asked questions and  explains how to  get the most
  20.           out of the drivers. 
  21.  
  22.           AVAILABLE DRIVERS
  23.  
  24.           This  initial  release  of   Windows  3.0  drivers  contained  an
  25.           800x600/16 colour driver,  which is supported by  all versions of
  26.           the  VGAWONDER & VGA EDGE. It also contained a 1024x768/16 colour
  27.           planar driver which requires  an analogue multisync monitor, 512k
  28.           video memory and  a VGAWONDER  V4, V5 or  VGAWONDER+. The  latter
  29.           driver is not supported on a VGAWONDER V3. 
  30.  
  31.           The November 5, 1990  release of Windows 3.0 drivers,  contains 2
  32.           new drivers and  a revised driver. The 640x480/256  colour driver
  33.           requires a VGA or analogue multisync monitor and a 512k VGAWONDER
  34.           (any version). The 800x600/256 colour driver requires an analogue
  35.           multisync  monitor  and  a  512k  VGAWONDER  (any  version).  The
  36.           1024x768/16 colour  driver has  been  revised to  use the  larger
  37.           8514/A  type fonts  rather  than VGA  type  fonts. A  1024x768/16
  38.           colour packed pixel driver is planned  for later in the year.  It
  39.           will be supported on all 512k VGAWONDER's, including the V3. 
  40.  
  41.           OBTAINING THE DRIVERS
  42.  
  43.           Drivers  for Windows  3.0  have been  included  with the  utility
  44.           diskettes  provided with  each VGAWONDER  starting with  diskette
  45.           version 1.07.  Updates are available by placing  an order through
  46.           ATI Technical Support (416)  756-0711 or by downloading by  modem
  47.           from  the ATI BBS (416)  756-4591 {9600/2400/1200 bps,  8 data, 1
  48.           stop bits, no parity}.
  49.  
  50.           INSTALLING THE DRIVERS - CREATING THE DISPLAY DRIVER DISKETTE
  51.  
  52.           ATI makes use of a facility built into Windows 3.0 for installing
  53.           third party video drivers. An option in the Windows SETUP program
  54.           allows the  user to select a  driver from a  Display Driver Disk.
  55.           There are  3  ways  to  obtain  a Display  Driver  Disk  for  the
  56.           VGAWONDER.
  57.           i)        If you have a set of VGAWONDER utility disks containing
  58.                     Windows  3.0 drivers,  run VDRIVER  and select  Windows
  59.                     3.0. The  VDRIVER program will create  a Display Driver
  60.                     Disk on a blank, pre-formatted disk.

  70.           ii)       If you  have ordered a Windows 3.0  driver upgrade disk
  71.                     from  ATI, it  is ready  to use  as the  Display Driver
  72.                     Disk.
  73.  
  74.           iii)      If you have downloaded the Windows 3.0 drivers from our
  75.                     BBS,  the INSTALL.BAT  will create  the  Display Driver
  76.                     Disk on  a blank,  formatted disk.  You will require  a
  77.                     copy of  the PKUNZIP  un-compression program  which can
  78.                     also be downloaded from the ATI BBS.
  79.  
  80.           FIRST TIME INSTALLATION
  81.  
  82.           This  section applies to users who have not yet installed Windows
  83.           on their  hard driver  or users  who wish  to reinstall from  the
  84.           diskettes. 
  85.  
  86.           A  Display Driver  Disk should  be prepared  as described  above.
  87.           Windows  should  be  installed  as described  in  the  Installing
  88.           Windows  with SETUP section in the Windows User's Guide. A screen
  89.           will appear asking the  user to verify the system  configuration.
  90.           The user  should use the cursor keys to move the highlight bar to
  91.           "Display:  VGA" and should then hit the enter key.  A window will
  92.           appear  containing a  number  of display  options.   The  correct
  93.           option is  "Other" (this is usually the last option in the list).
  94.           The  program  will then  prompt the  user  to insert  the Display
  95.           Driver Disk).  The SETUP program  may request this  disk (without
  96.           referring  to  the  name)  again later  during  the  installation
  97.           especially  if it  is being installed  on a  386 system  and/or a
  98.           networked system.

  100.           FIRST TIME INSTALLATION continued

  102.           Select  an   appropriate  driver  from  the   list  and  complete
  103.           installation. 
  104.  
  105.           WINDOWS ALREADY INSTALLED
  106.  
  107.           This section  applies to users who have already installed Windows
  108.           on their hard drives and do not wish to do a complete reinstall.
  109.  
  110.           Many configuration options of Windows can usually be changed with
  111.           the  Setup  option  in  the  Windows  Main  Group.  However,  ATI
  112.           recommends  that  display  driver   be  changed  by  running  the
  113.           SETUP.EXE program in the Windows  directory. Refer to the Running
  114.           setup  from MS-DOS section in the Using Setup to Maintain Windows
  115.           chapter in the Windows Users Guide.

  117.           Install drivers  as described in  paragraph 2  & 3 of  FIRST TIME
  118.           INSTALL.

  131.           SWAPPING DRIVERS
  132.  
  133.           This  section applies  to users  who may  wish to  change display
  134.           modes on occasion. Users may wish to use a certain  mode for some
  135.           applications and another mode for other applications.
  136.  
  137.           The   Windows  Setup  program  allows   the  user  to  select  an
  138.           appropriate  configuration, copies  the required  files from  the
  139.           disks (renaming some in the process) and stores the configuration
  140.           data. The configuration data is stored in special text files with
  141.           the  .INI extension.  The SYSTEM.INI  file contains all  the data
  142.           which affects the display. The items of importance to the display
  143.           include the display driver, frame grabber, virtual device driver,
  144.           system fonts and terminal fonts.
  145.  
  146.           ATI recommends that  users use SETUP.EXE  to create a  SYSTEM.INI
  147.           for each  mode the user may  wish to use. The  SYSTEM.INI must be
  148.           copied with another name or SETUP.EXE will erase the old version.
  149.           For  example, Windows  could be  installed for  each of  the four
  150.           modes and the  resulting SYSTEM.INI  files could be  copied to  a
  151.           name based on the resolution. In this example they would be named
  152.           800_16.INI,  1024_16.INI, 640_256.INI  and 800_256.INI.  The mode
  153.           can  be swapped simply by copying  (NOT renaming) the appropriate
  154.           file  to SYSTEM.INI before running Windows. It is not possible to
  155.           change video modes while Windows is running.
  156.  
  157.           UPDATING DRIVERS
  158.  
  159.           ATI may from time  to time offer updated Windows  drivers for the
  160.           VGAWONDER. These will  be announced  through our BBS  and can  be
  161.           obtained as described in  the section with the  OBTAINING DRIVERS
  162.           heading.  Users should be aware  that the Windows  SETUP will not
  163.           copy new drivers with the same file name from  the Display Driver
  164.           Disk. Therefore, you  must delete the  older ATI Windows  drivers
  165.           from  your  SYSTEM  sub-directory  before  installing  the  newer
  166.           drivers.
  167.  
  168.           PERFORMANCE
  169.  
  170.           Users  will notice  some  difference in  performance between  the
  171.           different modes. This is  partly due to the different  amounts of
  172.           graphics memory used in each mode  and partly due to the internal
  173.           architecture of the VGA chipset.
  174.  
  175.           The  16 colour modes  are substantially  quicker than  256 colour
  176.           modes  at the same resolution.  A 256 colour  mode requires twice
  177.           the video memory  of a 16 colour mode at  the same resolution. In
  178.           addition,   the  256   colour  modes   use  a   different  memory
  179.           architecture which is  less efficient than  the 16 colour  memory
  180.           architecture.

  192.           The fastest Super  VGA mode is the 800x600  /16 colour (mode 54h)
  193.           followed  by the 1024x768 /16 (mode 55h), the 640x480 /256 colour
  194.           (mode 62h) and the slowest is the 800x600 /256 colour (mode 63h).
  195.

  199.           HINTS - TROUBLESHOOTING
  200.  
  201.           Note that it is up to the user to determine  if the selected mode
  202.           is actually available. If  Windows exits to DOS after  displaying
  203.           the blue introduction  screen, it is likely that  the mode is not
  204.           available.  Use the  V-INFO  program supplied  on your  VGAWONDER
  205.           diskettes to check the  amount of display memory and  the monitor
  206.           type.  Check  the  monitor  specifications to  confirm  that  the
  207.           resolution desired is actually supported.
  208.  
  209.           Windows  requires more  than 512K  conventional system  memory to
  210.           install.  It may be necessary  to edit the  CONFIG.SYS and/or the
  211.           AUTOEXEC.BAT to remove some  device drivers and resident programs
  212.           in order to complete the install.
  213.  
  214.           If the user continues  to have problems after checking  the items
  215.           listed above, ATI recommends a complete new installation from the
  216.           disks.  Be sure to remove all Windows related device drivers from
  217.           the CONFIG.SYS  and reboot before attempting  a new installation.
  218.           These  device  drivers  are:  SMARTDRV.SYS,  EGA.SYS,  HIMEM.SYS,
  219.           EMM386.SYS and MOUSE.SYS.
  220.  
  221.           Users  with  third  party  386  memory  managers  may  experience
  222.           problems installing Windows in  Enhanced mode. The memory manager
  223.           must  be Windows 3.0 compatible. Contact  your 386 memory manager
  224.           vendor  for upgrade  information  if the  documentation does  not
  225.           specifically claim compatibility with  Windows 3.0. In may cases,
  226.           Windows  will  not install  with  a  third party  memory  manager
  227.           present  even if the memory manager is Windows 3.0 compatible. If
  228.           so, use  HIMEM.SYS instead  during Windows installation  and then
  229.           reinstall your memory manager.
  230.  
  231.           SCREEN COLOURS
  232.  
  233.           The  Windows environment is capable of supporting 256 colours but
  234.           you will find that few current applications  will make use of the
  235.           additional colours when  a 256 colour mode  is installed. Windows
  236.           reserves 20  colours for itself and  most applications (including
  237.           Windows Paint and  the colour function  of Windows Desktop)  will
  238.           only  allow the user to manipulate those 20 colours. Some colours
  239.           are created by mixing or "dithering" pure colours together.
  240.  
  241.           The remaining colours (256-20=236)  are controlled by the palette
  242.           manager function within Windows. Only software which makes use of
  243.           the palette  manager will  be able to  use more than  20 colours.

  253.           Some  of the applications which  do implement 256  colours are MS
  254.           Powerpoint,  Publishers Paintbrush  for  Windows and  256  colour
  255.           wallpapers can be displayed.
  256.  
  257.           RUNNING STANDARD APPLICATIONS
  258.  
  259.           Windows  has a  limited ability  to do  task switching  with non-
  260.           Windows  DOS (or "standard") applications.  They can be  run in a
  261.           window or full screen. 
  262.  
  263.           Running a  standard application in  a window requires  Windows to
  264.           convert the  screen image  of that  application into  a graphical
  265.           representation in the  window. This is  often painfully slow  and
  266.           many  graphics programs will not work in  the window. It is NEVER
  267.           possible  to use  a non-IBM  video  mode (resolution  higher than
  268.           640x480 /16 colours) program in the window even if the video mode
  269.           is  the same  as  the  Windows  video  mode.  See  the  following
  270.           paragraph for further explanation.
  271.  
  272.           Running  a  standard  application in  full  screen  mode  is much
  273.           simpler  and the  vast  majority of  software  will work.  It  is
  274.           possible to use any graphics mode in a full screen. However, task
  275.           switching  while  using a  non-IBM video  mode  will result  in a
  276.           trashed screen  after returning  from the Windows  desktop. Users
  277.           should  exit these  applications  before task  swapping. The  ATI
  278.           drivers  do not support "save and restore" of non-IBM video modes
  279.           (required  for   task  switching)  nor  do   they  support  "mode
  280.           conversion" of  non-IBM  video modes  (required  for  windowing).
  281.           Addition  of these  capabilities would  be a  massive undertaking
  282.           which would increase  the size  of the drivers  and increase  the
  283.           memory requirements.
  284.  
  285.           NETWORK INSTALLATIONS
  286.  
  287.           Users may  experience  problems when  installing high  resolution
  288.           drivers  for Windows on a network with  the SETUP /N option. This
  289.           option allows the  user to  minimize the disk  space consumed  on
  290.           individual  work stations  and  allow most  Windows  files to  be
  291.           shared through the network.
  292.  
  293.           You may see an message appear saying !! Error Building WIN.COM !!
  294.           during  installation. This is due to a problem with Windows SETUP
  295.           where it will try to install the  drivers from the Display Driver
  296.           Disk  to the  \Windows\System  directory. This  directory is  not
  297.           created  or  used  in  a  network  installation.  The  result  is
  298.           installation failure.

  300.           Microsoft has been made aware of  the problem and will correct it
  301.           in a future revision of Windows. In the  meantime, the ATI driver
  302.           can be manually installed as shown below.

  314.           MANUAL INSTALLATIONS
  315.  
  316.           This section  describes how  to install  the ATI  drivers without
  317.           using  Windows SETUP. It is  intended for advanced  users who are
  318.           experiencing network installation  problems or  find the  Windows
  319.           SETUP too tedious.
  320.  
  321.           1)        Install Windows  for standard VGA. Ensure  that Windows
  322.                     is fully functional before proceeding.
  323.  
  324.           2)        Copy  the  *.DRV  and  the VDDVGA.386  files  from  the
  325.                     Display Driver  Disk into the Windows  directory on the
  326.                     workstation's hard drive (not the network drive).
  327.  
  328.           3)        Users running  the network  install should  ignore this
  329.                     step.
  330.  
  331.                     Copy the following file from the Windows diskettes into
  332.                     the Windows directory on your hard drive:

  334.                     V7VGA.GR3
  335.  
  336.                     You  will need  to  use the  Windows EXPAND  command to
  337.                     uncompress the font  files from the Windows disk  1. An
  338.                     example of the command is shown below:
